Bank of England lead recruiter Philip Smith has been announced as a new trustee of industry charity, Railway Mission.

Philip, 36, will join Julia Jaeger on the Personnel, Pastoral & Training (PPT) Committee of the charity which offers independent, confidential and impartial pastoral care to the railway community and members of the public affected by railway operations.

He brings a wealth of recruitment and resource knowledge and experience to the role.

A dedicated Human Resources professional in the City, Philip has previously worked for Transport for London where he was responsible for bringing in graduates to train for a variety of roles from drivers to engineers and technical specialists, and Northern Rail where he helped recruit train drivers and conductors.

As Talent Acquisition Partner at the Bank of England, he fulfils around 200 roles each year ensuring the bank meets its recruitment needs.

Leeds-born Philip also volunteers as a disability champion, empowering members of staff with disabilities to seek support when interviewing for positions within the bank.

He is the founder and volunteer CEO of Friends of the British Overseas Territories (FOTBOT), a charity which supports citizens in UK Overseas Territories as well as those from the territories in the UK, and Volunteer Co-ordinator for the Epping Ongar Railway – where he is also one of the volunteers in the cafe.

Philip will also use his contacts in Parliament and other charities, including the UK Heritage Railway sector about which he’s passionate, to promote the work of Railway Mission.

Philip said: “I am thrilled to join Railway Mission as a new trustee and looking forward to meeting our chaplains over the months ahead and supporting the leadership team.

“My current role and various charitable positions will enable me to bring best practice and a wide variety of ideas that Railway Mission will be able to benefit from, in particular around updating policies and procedures, and what support mechanisms we can put in place for our hard-working chaplains.”

Liam Johnston, executive director at Railway Mission, added: “We are delighted to welcome Philip as a trustee and look forward to the valuable contribution we know he will make. His breadth of knowledge and experience in Human Resources will serve to enhance the work of Railway Mission and support those within it, as we continue our journey to enrich lives and nurture resilience across the sector.”

Railway Mission’s chaplains offer face-to-face year-round support, especially during an individual’s time of loneliness, stress, depression, trauma, bereavement or illness.

Its work contributes to self-esteem, health and well-being, and productivity.
