West Highland Line postcards for distribution on ScotRail trains

A new edition of postcards with spectacular views of the West Highland Lines has been produced for free distribution on ScotRail trains which serve the award-winning routes.

They follow the success of the first postcard series in 2009 and again are co-funded by Friends of the West Highland Lines and HITRANS, the Highlands and Islands Transport Partnership in Scotland.

The latest photographs by Norman McNab, an avid mountaineer and member of the Scottish Photographic Circle, feature:

• A Fort William-bound Caledonian Sleeper train leaving Rannoch on the climb to Corrour Summit

• A Mallaig-Glasgow service crossing Glenfinnan Viaduct

• A Glasgow-Oban/Mallaig service above Arrochar at noon, and:

• An Oban-Glasgow train west of Taynuilt

Mr McNab, a Killearn-based retired engineer and supporter of Friends of the West Highland Lines, said of his latest works: “The challenge was to capture all the wonderful variety of the West Highlands – and the ScotRail trains – in four pictures and in a way which does justice to the scenery and the railway.”

Graeme Macfarlan, ScotRail’s marketing manager, said: “We are delighted that Norman and the Friends have made such stunning images available to us.

“They will continue the fast-established ‘tradition’ of handing out free postcards from the catering trolley as a souvenir of journeys on the world-famous West Highland Lines or can be sent to their families and friends.

“They will also be on our Edinburgh-Oban Sunday train services for day trippers which will run on 10 weekends this summer.”

Frank Roach, HITRANS rail development manager, said: “We are pleased to be able support the Friends’ postcards. Norman MacNab’s photos fully deserve to be appreciated by the travelling public.”
