Rail services between Arnside and Grange-Over-Sands have resumed, following completion of a major project to renew the railway viaduct over the Kent Estuary.

Train services on the line had been replaced by alternative road services for the past 16 weeks to allow Network Rail to complete the work.

First TransPennine Express’ (FTPE) first services across the re-opened viaduct were the 0755 from Arnside travelling towards Barrow and the 0655 from Grange in the Carnforth direction.

Northern Rail will also be operating their usual timetable.

To celebrate the re-opening of the line, and to thank passengers for their patience, FTPE is to offer half price tickets for a limited period.

Passengers travelling on the Barrow-In-Furness to Manchester Airport route that start or end their journey between Arnside and Barrow-in-Furness (including intermediate stations) will be able to take advantage of this fantastic offer.

This discount is available on walk up fares for two weeks from 23rd July 2011 and applies only to FTPE services.

Edith Rodgers, Customer Services Director for FTPE, commented;

“It is great to have the line back in action, and we would like to thank passengers for their patience throughout the work. As a gesture for our passengers we are delighted to offer a half price fare deal to welcome passengers back to the line.”

The project has seen the complete replacement of the deck of the 500-metre, 51-span viaduct, which was built in 1856.

“The project has been completed on time by Network Rail in partnership with contractors May Gurney, and will mean less major maintenance in future, improved journeys times and a smoother, quieter ride over the structure.”

Station Manager for Cumbria, Mick Elliot added;

“The re-opening of the viaduct is great news for our passengers – last year over 110,000 passengers used Arnside station and over 150,000 used Grange.

“The upgrade work will help to ensure the longevity of the route.”

The FTPE only offer will be advertised via a local radio station and on station posters. It is not available on advance purchase tickets.
