Ash cloud travel advice for rail passengers travelling to Gatwick Airport

Listen to this article

Southern and Gatwick Express have published advice for their passengers who are travelling to Gatwick Airport.

The train operators say they ‘are aware that some airline passengers may be disrupted by flight delays or cancellations due to volcanic ash.’

The following special arrangements apply to passengers who have bought tickets from Southern or Gatwick Express for travel on their services:

If you have bought a ticket for travel on Southern or Gatwick Express (whether from one of their websites or stations) which you have not used they will refund it in full without the usual administration fee.

This also applies to Southern Advance tickets to or from Gatwick Airport (which are normally non-refundable).

If you wish to use your ticket at a different time then please note that Gatwick Express tickets can be used for 30 days so your ticket should automatically be valid. In the case of any other tickets please go to a Southern or Gatwick Express ticket office and they will either exchange or endorse your tickets accordingly.

If you have gone to the airport and wish to return to your starting point and travel at a later time please contact a Southern or Gatwick Express ticket office and they will either exchange or endorse your tickets accordingly.

Passengers who think they may be in this position should retain their tickets when they arrive at Gatwick Airport as Southern or Gatwick Express cannot offer this facility without the original ticket being produced.

These arrangements apply until the end of 26 May but may be extended depending on atmospheric conditions and the effect on flights operating to and from Gatwick Airport.
