Great Central Railway in bid for £2.5m funding

Up to 200 new jobs and an 18 mile long heritage line could be created if a bid for £2.5m by the Great Central Railway Development Company is approved by the Government Regional Growth Fund.

The company’s aim is to reconnect the 2 sections of operational Great Central Railway, which would also involve bridging the Midland Main Line near Loughborough station in Leicestershire. This would link Leicester with Ruddington and the National Rail network. It would also  see the magnificently restored GCR station at Loughborough become a through station for the first time since 1969.

It is envisaged that the line could be used by many of the rail companies around the East Midlands for testing of rolling stock, as well as for railtours.
