RMT tells London Underground it’s ‘not too late’ to stop Tube strikes

Strike action is set to begin this weekend following a row over the sacking of a RMT member.

The strikes, to begin on Sunday 19th June at 9pm, could also continue throughout the dates surrounding Wimbledon.

The RMT have said it’s ‘not too late’ for London Underground to make amends.

The union said that ‘rather than plunging London into a series of tube-wide actions there is still time to put right this wrong’.

Bob Crow said the union remains ‘available for talks aimed at achieving a just outcome’.

Around half of all Tube drivers are members of the RMT, and all of these members have been ‘instructed not to book on for any duty’ between these dates:

  • Between 21.01 hours on Monday 27th June and 11.59 hours onTuesday 28th June.
  • Between 12.00 hours on Wednesday 29th June and 11.59 hours on Thursday 30th June.
  • Between 12.00 hours on Friday 1st July and 21.00 hours on Friday 1st July.

With strike action in the tube victimisation dispute beginning this weekend, tube union RMT today outlined the reasons behind the strike.

The driver at the centre of the dispute, Arwyn Thomas has been ‘a member of the RMT for nearly 30 years and throughout this time has had an exemplary employment record’.

The RMT say the allegations made against Mr Thomas (including being abusive towards a strike-bearer) are ‘wholly unfounded’.

The results of Arwyn’s Employment Tribunal have not yet been released, but the RMT say the charges against Mr Thomas are ‘entirely bogus’.

RMT General Secretary Bob Crow said:

“The facts in Arwyn Thomas’s case could not be clearer and with the rolling action due to start this weekend I would appeal again to London Underground to see sense, abide by the spirit of the agreement we reached with them weeks ago over these victimisations and get Arwyn back to work doing what he is being paid to do – drive tube trains.”

  1. SACK THE LOT OF THEM. THERE ARE ENOUGH PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY THAT COULD BE TRAINED. ITS ABOUT TIME RAIL WORKERS GOT INTO THE REAL WORLD LIKE MOST OF THE WORKING UK POPULATION

  2. Sack Bob Crow – the man is a bully!
We would all like to stay home to watch the tennis but instead we have to deal with a tube strike that seems completely out of proportion to the circumstances surrounding it.  I hope TFL stick to their guns… I would rather struggle into work then know that they have given in to the demands of a mad man.

  3. Please can we get rid of them all?  We have been held to ransom long enough, time to cut the dead wood and bring the organisation out of the dark ages.  I can’t think of anything more ridiculous in the current climate – there are so many people who would happily take that pay and do the job without the archaic union system.
